Samantha Jones, the CEO of Operose, the UK subsidiary of the giant US corporation Centene, is leaving the company to take up a position as health advisor to Boris Johnson, according to a report in the HSJ.
Whilst Operose CEO, Ms Jones oversaw the company’s acquisition of the primary care company AT Medics, finalised in February 2021. With the takeover, Operose acquired contracts covering almost 50 primary care sites across 19 London boroughs.
Ms Jones took up her position at Operose in January 2019, moving from director of new care models at NHS England, a position she was appointed to in 2015 by its chief executive Simon Stevens.
HSJ, notes that her title in Number 10 will be expert adviser for NHS transformation and social care delivery, and she will work in the policy unit.
Operose’s acquisition of AT Medics has alarmed campaigners against the privatisation of the NHS. In February 2021, campaigners wrote to Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, questioning the legality of the takeover.
The letter accuses the CCGs involved of a “lack of openness, transparency and misrepresentation” and questions the involvement of NHS England in the process
